Book #8 Book Awards IV

Book #8 Book Awards IV Reading Challenge
On Foot to the Golden Horn: A Walk to Istanbul
(ISBN 0312420676)
by Jason Goodwin

This is an account of a six-month walk across eastern Europe to Istanbul in the early 1990s. Goodwin and his wife to be went through Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, meeting people and taking in the sights, and feeling the mixture of hope and anxiety for the future caused by the fall of the Iron Curtain. Goodwin’s education is in Byzantine history so his historical overviews are fascinating. He’s also a fine reader. This is on many lists of Best Travel Books for a reason – it’s an excellent book. This book won the 1993 John Llewellyn Rhys / Mail on Sunday Prize.
